My muse is demanding better working hours
I know I'm really late to the party, but I only just recently became aware of the phenomenal pop songs that emerged from the "KPop Demon Hunters" movie. I haven't actually watched the movie, but was exposed to the songs on Rick Beato's latest Spotify Top 10 survey video, and was INSTANTLY hooked by what I heard.
Digging further, I discovered there are 7 songs from the movie, that are, not surprisingly, impeccably written, performed, and produced. The songs are the result of a years-long effort that brought together Grammy-winning pop songwriters, production teams, and handpicked performers, all under the leadership of a musical director whose pedigree is in theater show music. Truly a true dream team of music makers at the top of their craft.
Two songs caught my attention in particular. The first is "Golden", primarily for its boldly adventurous melody:
As I explored this song further, I stumbled onto an interesting video examining the song's exhilirating melody. It presents some interesting insights into melody writing that I'm sure many of you are aware of, but are concepts I never thought about. I've never been analytical about writing melodies - I just go where the music leads me and follow what sounds good to my ear, which has served me well over the years. But I did find some of the points in this video interesting, and something I'll keep in my back pocket when writing in the future:
The other song that grabbed me is "What It Sounds Like". I think the lyric writing is simply excellent, and I love the tight, intricate vocal harmonies:
This kind of music is clearly not your typical singer-songwriter fare. The arrangements are thick with vocal, instrumental, and rhythmic layers, all exquisitely crafted and impeccably mixed. But if you strip away all the production glitz, you're still left with excellent songs, because it always comes down to the writing - it's the foundational core that everything else is built upon.
